Artificial intelligence has quietly become part of everyday life, writing emails, navigating directions, recommending what to watch next. For adult learners returning to school, AI can also become a powerful academic ally. The key is knowing how to use it thoughtfully.
AI works best when you treat it as a support, not a substitute. It can help you clarify ideas, organize your thoughts, or break down complex readings into manageable summaries. For example, many adult students use AI to brainstorm paper outlines, check understanding of course concepts, or generate practice questions before exams. These uses strengthen learning rather than replacing it.
That said, AI isn’t meant to do the work for you. Submitting AI-generated assignments without critical engagement can undermine both academic integrity and personal growth. The most successful students use AI as a thinking partner, asking better questions, refining drafts, and reflecting more deeply on feedback.
A helpful rule of thumb: if AI helps you understand, you’re on the right track. If it helps you avoid thinking, it’s time to pause.
Practical tips for ethical AI use:
Use AI to clarify instructions or rephrase confusing material.
Ask for feedback on your own writing rather than full rewrites.
Combine AI support with your course readings and lectures.
Follow your institution’s academic integrity guidelines closely.
